AMERICAN POSTCARD YEARS & TYPES
I will not claim to be a postcard collector, so please look at the scans for conditions. I’ll try to point out obvious defects if present.
I have always been a stamp collector, which naturally drew me to the back sides of postcards. Somewhere along the way I started to look at the fronts & began to enjoy what they offer. Here is a simplified guide to the 4 common types of American picture postcards as I understand them:
1) 1907 - 1915
Divided Back - Congress began to allow messages to be written on the left back side of picture postcards, beginning America’s love affair with them. This first phase dwindled down due to World War I, as
many of the best cards were
printed in Germany.
2) 1916 - 1930’s
American printed - mostly with white borders
3) 1930’s - early 1940’s
Linen Postcards - Front has an actual linen look with a
raised-grain surface. Known for exceptionally bright &
rich colorations.
4) 1940’s on
Chrome - excellent photo quality & inexpensive to produce
Please Note:
- There have been cards previous to 1907, but they are a very small part of the market.
- There are also many drawn postcards, especially in the humorous category.
